The Culture, Power and Politics Section will promote the study of cultural politics and of culture in/of relations of power in a broad sense as well as of the politics and power of/in culture. It will be a space for the exchange and debate between different positions, as well as for the development of collaborative relations among its members. This dialogue, debate, and collaboration should be enhanced through an examination of the epistemological, political, and theoretical differences existing between some of our perspectives as: cultural studies, subaltern studies, ethnic studies, gender studies, political economy, politology, political/cultural sociology, social/political/cultural anthropology, literary studies, communication and media studies, and history, among others.

The proposal for the creation of the Section was approved by the Executive Committee of LASA and the Section came into formal existence in 1997, counting with the support of 49 registered members who paid their Section dues so that the Section dues.

The first elected board for the Culture, Power and Politics Section of LASA was constituted by Daniel Mato (Universidad Central de Venezuela), Chair; Silvia Hirsch (Trenton College), Treasurer; Sonia Alvarez (UC-Santa Cruz), Mary García Castro (Universidade Federal da Bahia), Lourdes Martínez Echazabal (UC-Santa Cruz) , Mary Louise Pratt (Stanford University), and George Yúdice (NYU), Council Members.

Present membership:
The CPP Section finished the 2004 member year with 273 members, entitling it to four sessions at LASA2006 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from March 15-18.


Culture, Power and Politics Subthemes:
Some subthemes under the general topic of Culture, Power and Politics were identified in 2003. Though these may well change over time, they give an idea of the current research interests of the membership.

  • Regional integration and economic and cultural hegemony
  • Intellectuals, criticism, knowledge
  • Human rights, memory, politics
  • Cultural production and power
  • Advertising, consumption and new forms of social inequality

Algunos subtemas del campo de problematización de Cultura, Poder y Politica fueron identificados en 2003. Aunque puedan cambiar en el futuro, ellos dan una idea de los actuales intereses de investigación de la membresía.
